    President Donald Trump described cryptocurrency as \u201cpowerful\u201d and called himself a \u201cbig crypto guy\u201d during the July 6 launch of new tax-advantaged investment accounts for children, even as he sought to distance himself from his own family\u2019s digital-asset businesses.<\/p>\n

    Speaking at the event for the \u201cTrump accounts,\u201d which do not themselves include crypto, the president said he had \u201cgot involved in it a little bit for politics\u201d because many voters supported the industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n

    Pressed on his family\u2019s ventures, he said, \u201cI let my kids do whatever the hell they do\u2026 I don\u2019t talk to them ever about it,\u201d and, referring to the family-linked platform World Liberty Financial, added there was \u201cnothing illegal, there\u2019s nothing wrong with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Scrutiny Over Family Ventures<\/h2>\n

    The remarks land against growing scrutiny of the overlap between the administration\u2019s crypto policy and the president\u2019s family interests.\u00a0<\/p>\n

    Trump-linked ventures, including World Liberty Financial\u2019s $WLFI token and memecoins tied to the president and Melania Trump, reportedly generated large cash flows in his second term.<\/p>\n

    Forbes has reported the family cashed out roughly US$1.9 billion (AU$2.74 billion) across the projects, and estimated that retail investors lost about US$7 billion (AU$10.08 billion) in the same vehicles.<\/p>\n

    Office of Government Ethics disclosures have tied substantial cryptocurrency holdings to World Liberty Financial, though the figures are difficult to pin down and mix token valuations with realised proceeds. The president has repeatedly said his children run the ventures independently and that he takes no part in the decisions.\u00a0<\/p>\n
