Circle has acquired nearly 1,000 IBM blockchain patents as the USD Coin (USDC) issuer pushes deeper into the infrastructure connecting stablecoins with banks and payment networks.<\/p>\n

In a July 27 statement, the firm said the portfolio includes more than 680 patent families spanning blockchain technology, banking, financial services, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, supply-chain verification, and secure cloud operations.<\/p>\n

Circle said the deal makes it the leading holder of blockchain patents in the United States.<\/p>\n

The patents will support USDC, Circle Payments Network, its Arc blockchain and a growing suite of onchain and agentic financial tools, while Circle and IBM plan to explore additional commercial opportunities.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the acquisition gives Circle potential intellectual-property leverage as stablecoins move beyond crypto trading into settlement, treasury operations and mainstream payments, where IBM spent years patenting ways to connect blockchain systems with conventional financial networks.<\/p>\n

Circle General Counsel Sarah Wilson said:<\/p>\n

\u201cIntellectual property is critical to advancing our mission and expanding adoption of onchain infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

IBM patents give Circle deeper leverage in the payment stack<\/h2>\n

The potential value of IBM’s portfolio becomes clearer in patents covering the point where blockchain assets meet conventional settlement and compliance systems.<\/p>\n

One active IBM patent, \u201cBlockchain settlement network\u201d (US11599858B2), describes moving digital value over a blockchain alongside an off-chain payment and monitoring the transaction until the external transfer settles.<\/p>\n

The patent remains active through 2041 and is classified across payment architectures, electronic currency, and banking.<\/p>\n

Its claims are considerably narrower than stablecoin payments generally, requiring a particular sequence linking an onchain asset transfer to an off-chain settlement. That limits its reach against ordinary USDC or USDT transfers but could make it more relevant to systems combining blockchain liquidity with existing payment rails.<\/p>\n

Another active IBM patent, \u201cBlockchain compliance verification network\u201d (US11676117B2), covers capturing payment information and preserving compliance and settlement records on a blockchain. Its specifications explicitly address AML, KYC, sanctions compliance and ISO 20022 payment messaging.<\/p>\n

A separate application, \u201cReal-time blockchain settlement network\u201d (US20220172198A1), goes further into card-style payments.<\/p>\n

It describes a conventional payment network operating in parallel with a blockchain settlement network, including a token service provider that can trigger blockchain settlement while the underlying payment is being processed. The US application remains pending.<\/p>\n

Other IBM patents extend into cross-chain assets, private computation and secure blockchain infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Circle has not disclosed the individual patent numbers included in the acquisition, meaning the public IBM patents cannot yet be definitively identified as assets transferred in the deal.<\/p>\n

In a note shared with CryptoSlate<\/em>, Clear Street said the broader portfolio could strengthen Circle’s defensive position by giving the company leverage in cross-licensing and partnership negotiations and, in a more confrontational scenario, potential ammunition in patent litigation.<\/p>\n

That could become more useful as the GENIUS Act draws established financial companies with substantial patent portfolios into stablecoins. <\/p>\n

Still, the patents do not prevent those companies from building competing payment systems. However, a large portfolio can increase Circle’s negotiating leverage if competing technologies intersect with its claims.<\/p>\n

Clear Street sees another source of optionality beyond patent enforcement.<\/p>\n

The brokerage said further commercial cooperation with IBM could potentially expose Circle Payments Network, Arc and its tokenization products to IBM’s bank and enterprise client base. Cooperation around agentic commerce could provide another route for USDC adoption, although neither company has announced a specific product integration.<\/p>\n

USDC gains payment share as Tether and OUSD challenge Circle<\/h2>\n

Circle is adding that intellectual property as USDC takes a larger share of economically adjusted stablecoin transactions and moves deeper into established financial institutions.<\/p>\n

USDC accounted for roughly 70% of adjusted stablecoin transaction volume during the first half of 2026, compared with about 25% for Tether’s USDT, Visa’s Onchain Analytics data showed.<\/p>\n

Adjusted volume reached a record $1.79 trillion in June, up 63% from $1.1 trillion in May and 125% from about $795 billion a year earlier. The first six months generated about $8.82 trillion, already exceeding the $5.8 trillion recorded during all of 2024.<\/p>\n

Visa’s methodology filters activity such as bots and exchange-related transfers to provide a closer estimate of economically meaningful transactions.<\/p>\n

USDC’s transaction lead has developed alongside deeper integration with large banks.<\/p>\n

Standard Chartered on July 2 became the first global systemically important bank to offer institutional clients integrated USDC minting and redemption without requiring them to maintain direct Circle accounts.<\/p>\n

BNY expanded its Circle relationship days earlier, making USDC the first stablecoin supported on its Digital Asset Custody platform. Institutional clients can store, transfer, mint and burn USDC through BNY, which also remains the primary custodian of USDC reserves.<\/p>\n

However, those gains have not displaced Tether’s advantage in overall stablecoin scale.<\/p>\n

USDT retains a substantially larger circulating supply and entrenched global liquidity network even as USDC leads Visa’s adjusted transaction measure.<\/p>\n

Circle also faces a newer challenge closer to the institutional distribution model it is building.<\/p>\n

In June, Open Standard unveiled Open USD (OUSD) with more than 140 participating companies spanning banking, payments, technology and crypto. The network includes Visa, Mastercard, Coinbase and IBM, with OUSD expected to launch later this year.<\/p>\n

Its structure directly targets the economics of stablecoin distribution.<\/p>\n

Open Standard says businesses will be able to mint and redeem OUSD without fees or volume limits, while most reserve revenue, minus a management fee, will be returned to companies that adopt and distribute the token.<\/p>\n

That leaves Circle facing different competitive pressures. Tether brings the industry’s largest established liquidity pool, while OUSD is trying to organize many of the banks, card networks and technology companies Circle wants as distribution partners around shared stablecoin economics.<\/p>\n

The overlap is particularly notable because IBM is participating in the OUSD ecosystem while selling blockchain intellectual property to Circle and exploring further commercial cooperation with the USDC issuer.<\/p>\n

CRCL rises on patent deal, but financial payoff remains distant<\/h2>\n

The announcement gave Circle shares an immediate lift, pushing CRCL about 3% higher to $64. Still, the stock remains close to its lowest levels since February, when it traded around $58.<\/p>\n

Clear Street said the IBM acquisition strengthens Circle strategically but is unlikely to produce meaningful near-term revenue.<\/p>\n

The brokerage sees longer-term opportunities through Circle Payments Network and Arc, where the patent portfolio could add technical differentiation, support new partnerships and eventually generate licensing income. It characterized any licensing revenue as upside optionality rather than something likely to materially change current estimates.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Clear Street said the larger opportunity may come from the broader IBM relationship.<\/p>\n

According to the firm, Circle’s access to IBM’s banking and enterprise client base could provide additional distribution for Circle’s payments, blockchain and tokenization products and potentially create more financial value than patent licensing alone.<\/p>\n

Circle has not disclosed what it paid for the portfolio or detailed how it intends to monetize the assets.<\/p>\n

That leaves investors with a longer-term proposition: Circle has strengthened its intellectual-property position and gained a potentially valuable enterprise relationship, but it still needs to show that either can materially improve the economics of USDC, Circle Payments Network and Arc.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
