The 1776 ~ 2026-W Enhanced Uncirculated American Gold Eagle drew intense demand when it launched May 28, becoming unavailable from the United States Mint in less than two minutes. Two months later, the limited-mintage coin continues to sell above its original $5,370 issue price, although values for examples in their original Mint packaging have declined alongside gold.<\/p>\n

A CoinNews review of completed eBay listings found that these coins averaged about $6,539 in May, $6,241 in June and $5,875 in July. The July average was $664, or 10.2%, below May\u2019s level \u2014 nearly matching gold\u2019s decline over the same period \u2014 but remained $505 above the Mint\u2019s original price.<\/p>\n

Coins certified at the highest numerical grade of 70 have held up better. Those examples averaged about $6,788 in July, virtually unchanged from May and more than $900 above the month\u2019s average for ungraded coins.<\/p>\n

Coins in Original Mint Packaging Move Below $6,000<\/h2>\n

CoinNews reviewed 51 completed listings for individual, uncertified coins offered with their original U.S. Mint packaging from May 22 through July 27.<\/p>\n

All seven July listings showed figures below $6,000, and six were at $5,900 or less. The two latest examples in the sample were listed as completed at $5,799 on July 25 and $5,750 on July 27.<\/p>\n

Even at $5,750, the latest coin remained $380 above the Mint\u2019s original price. The highest July result, at $5,999, carried a premium of $629.<\/p>\n

The ungraded sample included 37 Buy It Now transactions, three auctions and 11 listings marked Best Offer. Because eBay does not disclose the amount accepted through Best Offer, some displayed figures may be higher than the actual prices paid. The May results also included one advance listing completed before the coin\u2019s release.<\/p>\n

Gold\u2019s Decline Weighs on Values<\/h2>\n

Gold prices fell substantially during the same period.<\/p>\n

Using comparable afternoon spot-price quotes, gold declined from about $4,504 an ounce on May 28 to just under $4,050 on July 31, a drop of roughly $454, or 10.1%.<\/p>\n

The average price for ungraded Enhanced Uncirculated Gold Eagles fell by a nearly identical percentage from May to July. Since each coin contains one troy ounce of fine gold, the bullion decline appears to account for much of the reduction in secondary-market values.<\/p>\n

Collector premiums also appear to have narrowed. The decrease in the average ungraded price was about $210 greater than the drop in gold, although the comparison is only approximate because monthly coin averages are being measured against gold prices from two specific trading days.<\/p>\n

Grade 70 Coins Hold Firmer<\/h2>\n

CoinNews also reviewed 51 sales of coins certified at grade 70 from May 13 through July 31. PCGS designates these enhanced uncirculated coins as SP70, while NGC uses MS70.<\/p>\n

The sample was almost evenly divided between 26 PCGS coins and 25 certified by NGC.<\/p>\n

Unlike ungraded coins, average prices for grade 70 examples showed almost no change between May and July. July\u2019s average of $6,788 was just $1 higher than May\u2019s, although it was $354 below the stronger June average.<\/p>\n

July\u2019s figure was about $913 higher than the average for ungraded coins that month and $1,418, or 26.4%, above the Mint\u2019s issue price.<\/p>\n

The higher June average was influenced by several stronger transactions, including PCGS-certified coins at $7,645 and $7,999.89.<\/p>\n

Sale format also made a noticeable difference. Seventeen auctions attracted between 14 and 67 bids and averaged about $6,531. The 34 Buy It Now transactions averaged approximately $7,010.<\/p>\n

Across the full sample, PCGS coins averaged about $6,935, compared with roughly $6,762 for NGC examples. Several PCGS transactions above $7,500 helped lift that average.<\/p>\n

The May group included nine advance sales dated before the May 28 release. The review also did not separate the coins by special labels or early-release designations, which can affect individual prices.<\/p>\n

First Gold Coin With Enhanced Finish<\/h2>\n

The West Point-struck $50 Gold Eagle launched for $5,370 with a mintage limit of 7,500 and an initial household order limit of one. Its price was based on the Mint\u2019s weekly precious-metals pricing matrix and an LBMA gold range of $4,500 to $4,549.99 an ounce. The Mint\u2019s latest sales report, covering results through July 26, lists 7,511 coins sold, 11 more than the stated limit.<\/p>\n

The one-ounce, 22-karat piece is the first gold coin produced with the U.S. Mint\u2019s enhanced uncirculated finish. The treatment combines laser-frosted areas with selective matte finishing to create contrasting textures across the designs and fields. Its Semiquincentennial elements include the dual date 1776 ~ 2026 and a Liberty Bell privy mark containing the numeral “250.” Augustus Saint-Gaudens\u2019 Liberty appears on the obverse, while the reverse features Jennie Norris\u2019 close-up portrait of an eagle.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
