The remaining exposure is far smaller than the aUSDT contract\u2019s headline supply. Alloy\u2019s official vault data showed five open collateral-mint positions with 399,088.74 aUSDT of debt and 194.41497 XAUT of collateral at 00:04:52 UTC on Aug. 10.<\/p>\nAlloy\u2019s open position debt fell 56% to 399,088.74 aUSDT by Aug. 10, with its platform recovery route closing Sept. 17.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
50 million tokens do not equal Tether’s live debt<\/h2>\n
Alloy\u2019s token API and Etherscan both showed a maximum total supply of 50,000,005 aUSDT, a figure that does not represent open debt.<\/p>\n
Alloy\u2019s product documentation says unissued aUSDT can sit idle in the smart contract, while the vault API directly measures debt tied to open positions. The Aug. 10 debt was less than 0.8% of maximum supply.<\/p>\n
Address counts also overstate what can be learned about affected customers. Alloy\u2019s API showed 209 holder addresses, compared with 80 on Etherscan, and neither count maps to the five open positions. A customer may also control more than one whitelisted address.<\/p>\n
The system has unwound substantially since the June 30 disclosure, which recorded 907,994.8205 aUSDT as issued and 470.4215 XAUT as collateral. The Aug. 10 API instead labels the obligation as open debt, which had fallen to 399,088.74 aUSDT, while collateral had dropped to 194.41497 XAUT.<\/p>\n
Those point-in-time figures represent declines of about 56% and 58.7%, respectively.<\/p>\n

Tether’s gold position now rivals that of several sovereign nations, and a new partnership with a lending platform is testing whether tokenized bullion can function as collateral in the same way Bitcoin already does.<\/p>\n
Alloy says a collateral-mint-position holder must extinguish the full outstanding aUSDT balance to remove all remaining XAUT, and it documents a 25-basis-point return fee. Buying aUSDT on a secondary market does not confer rights to a specific position\u2019s collateral.<\/p>\n
Tether\u2019s June 17 announcement says the Alloy recovery route becomes unavailable starting Sept. 17. Its announcement, platform notice and mint-and-return terms do not set out another operational recovery process after that date.<\/p>\n
The stated consequence is loss of the Alloy recovery route. The existing terms say XAUT reflected in a position remains the customer\u2019s, but is pledged to Tether AbT and is not held as a segregated asset in the customer\u2019s name. Those terms, last updated in 2024, do not explain post-deadline disposition.<\/p>\n
