{"id":12500,"date":"2026-08-28T08:28:16","date_gmt":"2026-08-28T08:28:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptonews.uk.com\/?p=12500"},"modified":"2026-08-28T08:28:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-28T08:28:16","slug":"starkware-mines-bitcoins-first-quantum-safe-transaction-on-mainnet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptonews.uk.com\/?p=12500","title":{"rendered":"StarkWare Mines Bitcoin&#8217;s First Quantum-Safe Transaction on Mainnet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div id=\"blockquote-block_6b544949aa3f30341fbaa75383b13a4a\" class=\"blockquote-container\" style=\"border-color: #5100fc\">\n<div class=\"blockquote-text\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">StarkWare announced Wednesday that a transaction using its Quantum Safe Bitcoin (QSB) method was confirmed in block 964,199, mined by MARA Pool at 8:48 p.m. UTC.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">QSB, designed by StarkWare researcher Avihu Levy, uses \u201csignature grinding\u201d to rest security on hash functions instead of the elliptic-curve cryptography a quantum computer could break.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">StarkWare says QSB does not make Bitcoin itself quantum-safe, and CEO Eli Ben-Sasson still wants and expects a protocol-level soft fork.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">StarkWare says it has run the first quantum-safe Bitcoin (BTC) transaction on mainnet, a spend confirmed in block 964,199 on Wednesday that is designed to shield the moved coins from future quantum attacks without changing Bitcoin\u2019s consensus rules.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chain data from Mempool.space shows the transaction combined inputs of 39,179 and 10,000 satoshis into a single 44,000-satoshi output, paid 5,179 satoshis in fees and was mined by MARA Pool at 8:48 p.m. UTC on Aug. 26.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">QSB transactions use a nonstandard format that ordinary nodes will not relay, so StarkWare submitted the spend directly to the miner through MARA\u2019s Slipstream service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Read more: US Community Banks Unite to Build Nationwide Blockchain Network<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-grinding-for-a-valid-signature\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grinding for a Valid Signature<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The method, called Quantum Safe Bitcoin, was designed by Avihu Levy, researcher and general manager of applications at StarkWare, who published the technique and an open-source repository in April.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It relies on what the firm calls signature grinding: searching off-chain for a spending transaction whose hash is itself a validly formatted signature, so the spend\u2019s security rests on the hardness of inverting a hash. StarkWare engineer Tomer Giladi is continuing the work, the announcement said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bitcoin\u2019s standard signatures depend on elliptic-curve cryptography, which Shor\u2019s algorithm could solve quickly on a sufficiently large quantum computer, StarkWare noted. Levy told trade publication The Quantum Insider the method adds \u201ca second lock that a quantum computer has no shortcut for\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Producing the mainnet transaction took hours of computation and cost several hundred dollars, according to the firm.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-starkware-still-wants-a-soft-fork\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">StarkWare Still Wants a Soft Fork<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">StarkWare\u2019s own announcement sets hard limits on the result. QSB \u201cdoes not make Bitcoin itself quantum-safe\u201d, the firm stated.
