    Ethereum co-founder, Vitalik Buterin, has expressed concern around the direction prediction markets are taking, suggesting they\u2019re heading down a path towards becoming \u201ccorposlop\u201d as they increasingly rely on \u201cpeople with dumb opinions who bet on totally wrong things,\u201d to generate their income.<\/p>\n

    Posting on X \/ Twitter on February 13, Buterin said that while prediction markets have been successful in capturing market share and generating large trading volumes, they\u2019ve developed too much of a focus on trivial betting. Popular markets such as short-term crypto prices and outcomes of sporting events provide little meaningful information, he said.<\/p>\n

    They seem to be over-converging to an unhealthy product market fit: embracing short-term cryptocurrency price bets, sports betting, and other similar things that have dopamine value but not any kind of long-term fulfillment or societal information value.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Buterin said prediction markets are currently dominated by what he called \u201cnaive traders\u201d. He characterises such traders as low-information users who essentially just bet on markets they consider to be fun and often lose their money.<\/p>\n

    IMO there is nothing fundamentally morally wrong with taking money from people with dumb opinions. But there still is something fundamentally \u2018cursed\u2019 about relying on this too much.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    The issue with this strategy, according to the Ethereum co-founder, is that it \u201cgives the platform the incentive to seek out traders with dumb opinions, and create a public brand and community that encourages dumb opinions to get more people to come in.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Ultimately, Buterin said, following this path will cause prediction markets to \u201cslide to corposlop.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Prediction Markets Should be Re-Conceptualised as Hedging Instruments, Says Buterin<\/h2>\n

    Buterin argued that a better and more useful path for prediction markets to take would be for them to become more like general hedging instruments. In his proposed use case, consumers could offset the cost of their future living expenses by taking hedging positions on prediction markets.<\/p>\n

    In Buterin\u2019s vision, there would be price indices on all major goods and services, in which different regions are treated as different categories within the indices \u2014 as Buterin calls it, a kind of \u201cdecentralized global price index.\u201d On top of these indices, there would be prediction markets on each category, allowing people to take positions on whether an index rises or falls.<\/p>\n

    Then each user could have their own local instance of a large language model (LLM) analyse their personal expenses, allowing the model to \u201cunderstand that user\u2019s expenses,\u201d and offer the user \u201ca personalized basket of prediction market shares,\u201d to offset their expenses for a predetermined period of time.<\/p>\n

    According to Buterin, systems like this wouldn\u2019t just give prediction markets a better business model; they\u2019d do away with the need for fiat currencies entirely.<\/p>\n

    Now, we do not need fiat currency at all! People can hold stocks, ETH, or whatever else to grow wealth, and personalized prediction market shares when they want stability.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Of course, actually implementing such a revolutionary new system is easier said than done, but if it were to be successfully implemented, it would offer significant benefits over the existing global financial order, Buterin claimed.<\/p>\n

    \u201cIf we can make it work, it\u2019s much more sustainable than the status quo, because both sides of the equation are likely to be long-term happy with the product that they are buying, and very large volumes of sophisticated capital will be willing to participate.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
