Tether’s abandoned Bitcoin mining venture in Uruguay, where a former contractor estimated spending reached about $120 million across two sites, is casting a shadow over the stablecoin issuer’s smaller renewable-energy pilot in Brazil. The Uruguay project unraveled after Tether’s local entity, Microfin, and state utility UTE disagreed over the terms governing electricity use, Reuters reported. Microfin understood its contracted allocation as a minimum that could be expanded, while UTE treated it as a maximum. The dispute was underway by late 2024. Microfin stopped paying power bills in May 2025, notified UTE the following month that it planned to terminate the contracts, and…
The US is expanding the threat of secondary sanctions to Iran-linked digital-asset activity as part of a broader campaign to isolate Tehran economically. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said crypto is among five sectors now facing increased sanctions pressure, with the others including gold, technology, aviation and shipping. The US has already targeted Iranian crypto networks, while the latest sanctions also hit 60 individuals, entities and vessels linked to Iran. Secondary sanctions haven’t been imposed immediately, but Washington is warning foreign businesses that continued dealings with Iran could put them in the firing line. Washington is putting crypto closer to the…

Bitcoin extended its rally on Tuesday, hitting the $80,000 psychological level for the first time since May 4. The rally comes as improving liquidity expectations continued to lift the broader cryptocurrency market. Bitcoin has gained nearly 30% in the last week, while Ethereum has risen more than 25% and XRP has advanced almost 30%. The rally gained momentum after the U.S. Treasury announced plans to double the size of certain debt buyback operations. The decision eased liquidity concerns and strengthened demand for risk-sensitive assets. With Bitcoin still flying, investors are now watching whether it can extend its rally and reach…
Bitcoin’s broken back above US$80,000, up 27.5% over the past week and currently trading at US$80,684. Bitfinex reports the rally came alongside the biggest short-liquidation event on record, with roughly US$3 billion in shorts wiped out on 19–20 August. The catalyst was a US Treasury announcement on expanded buybacks of longer-dated government debt, which pushed Bitcoin out of its US$62,000–US$65,000 range. Ether joined the rally too, up more than 32% since 19 August, while analysts are watching US$86,500 as the next resistance level for BTC. Bitcoin has broken through the US$80k (AU$111.8k) barrier again, gaining 4.3% over the past 24…
The Hyperliquid Policy Center filed a 15-page comment letter with the CFTC and SEC on 24 August, asking them to classify perpetual contracts by structure and not by the asset they reference. HIP-3 markets have traded over US$480 billion in ten months and hold about US$4 billion in open interest, the letter states, crediting data from ASXN. Hyperliquid is not currently available to persons in the United States, and the group says its work covers onchain markets “including those available on Hyperliquid”. Hyperliquid Policy Center asked the SEC and the CFTC to treat equity perpetual contracts as security futures. In…
Ledger users should update the Ethereum app to version 1.22.2 after official code changes showed that a malicious dApp or other connected host could start a second signing command while a transaction was still under review. In the path described by security company TestMachine, pressing approve could return a signature for substituted data instead of the transaction shown on the device.TestMachine said on Aug. 22 that the attack required a dApp with WebHID access. The group said a second command could replace the transaction held in memory without opening a new review, leaving the original details on screen while the device…
A newly merged Ethereum proposal would retire the network’s 512-validator sync committee, remove its rewards, and make the current Altair light-client interface obsolete by replacing it with offchain zero-knowledge proofs. The Draft EIP-8390 estimates that deleting the committee’s reward weight would reduce annual consensus issuance by roughly 33,800 ETH.Ethereum would give up an in-protocol mechanism that lets lightweight clients follow the beacon chain before the proposed replacement proving service, migration interface, and economic support have been specified.A sync committee is a 512-validator sample whose messages give light clients a compact way to track Ethereum without processing the full validator set.The proposal…
FalconX Bravo wants US regulators to treat cash-settled perpetuals tied to a single security or a narrow-based security index as security-based swaps under SEC rules when they fall outside the joint SEC-CFTC security-futures framework. The filing expressly includes comparable contracts offered through DeFi protocols. The firm submitted its proposal to the Securities and Exchange Commission and Commodity Futures Trading Commission on Aug. 12.
