CoinNews photos show the 2026-W Enhanced Uncirculated American Gold Eagle, offering a closer look at one of the U.S. Mint’s most closely watched Semiquincentennial gold coins

Released on May 28 for $5,370, the collectible is the first gold coin struck with the Mint’s enhanced uncirculated finish. Adding to its appeal, it carries the dual date 1776 ~ 2026 and a Liberty Bell privy mark with the numeral “250,” both marking the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding.

The coin did not last long. Less than two minutes after sales began, the Mint listed it as “Currently Unavailable” and added a “Remind Me” option for alerts if more become available. Its mintage is limited to 7,500.

The enhanced uncirculated finish is a key feature. The Mint says the treatment combines laser frosting for a brilliant metallic luster with selective matte laser finishing to create stronger contrast across the coin’s designs and backgrounds. The finish can be difficult to capture fully in photos, but CoinNews images help show the different surface effects across Liberty, the eagle, the inscriptions and the Semiquincentennial elements.

The obverse features Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Liberty, a design introduced on $20 gold coins in 1907 and later used on American Gold Eagles beginning in 1986. Refreshed in 2021 to more closely reflect Saint-Gaudens’ original intent, the 2026 version includes the dual date 1776 ~ 2026 and the Liberty Bell “250” privy mark.

The reverse shows Jennie Norris’ close-up eagle profile, introduced for the series in 2021 and sculpted by Renata Gordon. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 50 DOLLARS, and 1 OZ. FINE GOLD.
Each coin contains 1 troy ounce of gold, with an overall composition of 91.67% gold, 3% silver and the balance copper. It weighs 33.931 grams, measures 32.70 mm in diameter, and carries the “W” mint mark of the West Point Mint. The coin also includes the series’ anti-counterfeiting variable reeding along the edge.

The 2026-W Enhanced Uncirculated American Gold Eagle is the first of four enhanced uncirculated coins scheduled by the Mint for 2026. Additional issues include an American Silver Eagle on July 21, followed by Morgan and Peace silver dollars on Aug. 25.
