U.S. Mint Launches Liberty Bell-Shaped Gold Coins and Medal

Three distinctive new U.S. Mint products shaped like the Liberty Bell go on sale today as part of America’s 250th anniversary celebration, launching the new Freedom Ringing series.

Liberty Bell-Shaped Gold Coins and Medal
The Freedom Ringing coins and medal were individually hand-loaded and struck on a hydraulic press in the Philadelphia Mint’s Research and Development Laboratory, with their dies aligned to within the width of a human hair

Available beginning at noon ET are a one-ounce $250 gold coin, a half-ounce $125 gold coin and a half-ounce silver medal, each struck in the unmistakable shape of the iconic Liberty Bell.

    Bell-Shaped Design and Specialized Production

Unlike traditional round coins, these pieces celebrate one of America’s most enduring symbols of freedom in a format the U.S. Mint has never before attempted. Their unconventional design and specialized production process distinguish them from other modern releases.

The concept was first publicly discussed in 2024, when the Mint began considering Liberty Bell-shaped gold coins and a silver medal for the nation’s Semiquincentennial.

The line-art images above show designs recommended in 2024 for the non-round 2026 Liberty Bell one-ounce gold coin, half-ounce gold coin and silver medal

Specialized production techniques were required to create the bell-shaped coins and medal.

“Each polished, custom Liberty Bell–shaped blank was individually hand-loaded and struck using a hydraulic press available only in the Philadelphia Mint’s Research and Development Lab,” the Mint described. “Due to their unique shape, the dies were aligned with accuracy within the width of a human hair.”

For the first time, the Mint combined laser engraving and finishing into a single production step, sharpening design details while adding textures such as the frosted windows of Independence Hall.

The U.S. Mint provides a behind-the-scenes look at the development and production of the Freedom Ringing products in the video below.

Premium Prices and Mintages of 2,026

Demand will be closely watched, given their unique format, patriotic theme, extraordinary rarity and premium prices. The one-ounce gold coin is priced at $19,600, the half-ounce gold coin at $10,050 and the half-ounce silver medal at $750. In a nod to the year of the nation’s 250th anniversary, each product has a maximum mintage of just 2,026, placing them among the lowest-mintage modern issues from the United States Mint.

Liberty Bell and Independence Hall Designs

All three carry the dual-date inscription 1776 ~ 2026, appearing on the obverse of the gold coins and the reverse of the silver medal. The obverse resembles the Liberty Bell, including its famous crack and LIBERTY across the shoulder.

Additional obverse inscriptions on the gold coins include the mint mark and IN GOD WE TRUST. The silver medal also carries the mint mark on its obverse but omits the motto.

The reverse of each gold coin depicts Independence Hall, the original home of the Liberty Bell, with celebratory fireworks in the background. The bell’s yoke displays UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with E PLURIBUS UNUM below. Depending on the coin, the sound bow is inscribed with either $250, 1 OZ. and .9999 FINE GOLD or $125, 1/2 OZ. and .9999 FINE GOLD.

The silver medal features the same reverse design but carries the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and 1776 ~ 2026.
