U.S. Mint Liberty Bell Gold Coins Return After Fast Start

The U.S. Mint’s limited-edition Freedom Ringing collection, featuring 1776 ~ 2026 Liberty Bell-shaped gold coins and a silver medal, drew exceptionally high demand upon its July 16 release. The half-ounce silver medal became unavailable within one minute, while the one-ounce and half-ounce gold coins remained available for less than 30 minutes.

Both gold coins have since returned for sale on the Mint’s website, while the silver medal remains unavailable. The initial one-per-household order limits on both gold coins have also been removed.

Secondary Market Activity

Early secondary-market trading reflects strong collector interest, with notable premiums over issue prices.

Based on a limited sampling of recent transactions, the half-ounce silver medals have averaged approximately $3,800, compared with their $750 issue price. The half-ounce gold coins have averaged roughly $11,900 against an original price of $10,050, while the one-ounce pieces have averaged around $23,100 versus their $19,600 launch price.

Production Details and Limits

Limited to 2,026 pieces each, the Freedom Ringing releases commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence. Their Liberty Bell-shaped designs incorporate the bell’s familiar crack and “LIBERTY” inscription, with Independence Hall appearing on the reverse.

The Mint used laser-based engraving and finishing techniques to sharpen the designs and create contrasting surface effects, including frosted windows on Independence Hall.

Each specially shaped blank was loaded by hand and struck on a hydraulic press in the Philadelphia Mint’s Research and Development Laboratory. According to the Mint, their unusual shape required the dies to be aligned within roughly the width of a human hair.
