1998 Silver Libertad Sells for $46,125 as Prices Surge

A 1998-Mo Mexican Silver Libertad graded NGC MS-70 realized $46,125 after attracting 23 bids in a recent GreatCollections auction, underscoring rapidly rising demand for key dates in the modern series.

GreatCollections said interest in modern Mexican coins has grown substantially over the past five years and accelerated further during the last six months, drawing bidders participating from around the world.

With a mintage of 67,000, the 1-ounce 1998 Silver Libertad, cataloged as KM-613, ranks among the scarcer dates in the series.

Collectors are increasingly seeking older Libertads to complete date sets, resembling a trend previously seen with American Silver Eagles. Supplies of earlier-dated Libertads are considerably thinner, however, as collectors and dealers did not store large quantities of many prior issues.

“The Mexican Libertad series is following the same path we watched the American Silver Eagle take over the last decade — collectors are chasing the backdated key dates to finish their sets. The difference is supply. Nobody put away monster boxes of the 1998 Onza the way they did with Silver Eagles, so when a coin like this MS-70 comes up, the bidding tells you exactly how much the market has progressed,” said Ian Russell, president of GreatCollections.

Prices Climb Across Multiple Grades

The $46,125 MS-70 result stands well above prices for lower-graded examples, but GreatCollections auction records show that the 1998 Libertad has appreciated across several grade levels.

An MS-69 example brought $1,114 in June 2023. Three years later, an NGC MS-69 realized $5,063, about 4.5 times as much. Other MS-69 sales included $1,688 in June 2024 and $3,600 in November 2025.

The increase has been similarly pronounced in MS-68. A PCGS example sold for $686 in November 2022, compared with $2,925 in January 2026 and $3,150 in June 2026. The latest result was approximately 4.6 times the November 2022 price.

In MS-67, a PCGS-certified coin brought $632 in November 2022, while an NGC example realized $1,098 in May 2025, an increase of nearly 74%.

Gold Libertad Demand Also Strengthens

GreatCollections said the same pattern is emerging among Mexican Gold Libertads, particularly for scarce fractional issues from the 1990s and 2000s.

The Mexican Mint, Casa de Moneda de México, has produced Gold Libertads since 1981 in weights ranging from 1/20 ounce to 1 ounce. Many earlier-dated issues featured low mintages, and relatively few were preserved in significant quantities.

As collectors who completed Silver Libertad sets turn their attention to the gold series, the auction house has observed stronger competition for scarce dates and high-grade fractionals. GreatCollections anticipates that Gold Libertads will follow a trajectory comparable to that already established in the silver series.

Centenario Set Offered Aug. 9

Demand for Mexican coins is also extending into classic gold issues.

GreatCollections will offer a complete NGC-graded set of Mexican 50 Pesos gold coins, dated from 1921 through 1947, in its Aug. 9 auctions. The group includes the first-year 1921 coin and the rare 1931/0 overdate, two of the most desirable issues in the series.

Commonly known as Centenarios, the 50 Pesos coins were introduced to commemorate the centennial of Mexican independence. Each contains 1.2057 ounces of gold.

The performance of the complete set will serve as another indicator of whether the heightened demand observed in modern Libertads is expanding more broadly across the Mexican coin market.
