Hours Left to Order U.S. Mint Freedom 250 Race Medal

Collectors have only hours remaining to order the United States Mint’s 2026 Freedom 250 Race Medal, with its two-week preorder window scheduled to close Friday, Sept. 4, at 3 p.m. ET.

Priced at $60, the medal celebrates America’s 250th anniversary and the inaugural Freedom 250 Grand Prix held Aug. 22-23 in Washington, D.C. As CoinNews reported ahead of its Aug. 21 release, the medal also honors motorsports pioneer Roger Penske.

Unlike most Mint products, the medal is produced to demand from orders placed during the preorder window, up to a maximum of 15,000. The Mint has said no additional medals will be struck after the window closes.

Opening sales reached 5,105 medals. Another 3,137 were added in the latest weekly report, lifting the total to 8,242 through Aug. 30, or 54.9% of the maximum mintage.

Based on the sales pace through Thursday, roughly 3,500 medals may remain available before Friday’s cutoff.

The medal’s obverse depicts an Indy car inscribed USA alongside the U.S. Capitol, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FREEDOM 250 around the design. The reverse features a portrait of Penske with MOTORSPORT PIONEER and ROGER PENSKE.

Struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a matte finish, the clad medal matches the size, weight and composition of a U.S. half dollar. It measures 1.205 inches in diameter and has a plain edge. Each piece is encapsulated and housed in a U.S. Mint presentation box. Shipping is expected to begin Sept. 28.
