Hoskinson reveals new code for Cardano, but $63M TVL exposes a gap

Charles Hoskinson is developing a new programming language for Cardano as the blockchain approaches a pivotal test of commercial demand.

The Cardano founder said he is working with developer Lucas Rosa, a software engineer at Input Output Global, on a language supporting intent-based transactions and proof-carrying data using Groth16 cryptographic proofs.

The announcement follows Hoskinson’s declaration that the forthcoming Leios scalability upgrade would complete his original vision for the blockchain, marking a potential turning point after years of technical development.

The ambitions contrast with Cardano’s economic footprint. Despite its ADA token commanding a market capitalization of about $8.3 billion, decentralized finance applications on the network hold just $63 million in assets, while daily trading volume remains below $1 million.

The disparity raises questions about whether additional technology can attract the users and capital needed to support a larger financial ecosystem.

Cardano’s limited liquidity raises stakes for its next upgrade

According to DefiLlama, Cardano’s decentralized exchanges processed approximately $927,000 in transactions over the preceding 24 hours as of Oct. 19. Weekly trading volume stood at $8.35 million, down 25% from the previous seven-day period.

The network also recorded 12,716 active addresses and 28,146 transactions during the day, generating approximately $2,196 in blockchain fees. Its stablecoin supply stood at about $70 million, reflecting a relatively small pool of dollar-denominated liquidity to support trading, lending, and other financial applications.

The figures stand out when compared with larger blockchain ecosystems.

For example, Solana held approximately $5.9 billion in DeFi deposits and processed $1.45 billion in decentralized exchange transactions over the same 24-hour period, according to DefiLlama. Its stablecoin supply exceeded $15.5 billion.

Although Solana’s market capitalization stands at roughly $62 billion, about seven times Cardano’s, its DeFi deposits are more than 90 times larger, showing how unevenly capital and financial activity are distributed among competing blockchain networks.

For Cardano, that gap creates a commercial challenge extending beyond transaction-processing capacity.

Decentralized exchanges need sufficient liquidity to accommodate larger trades without significant price slippage, while lending platforms require deposits and borrowing demand to generate revenue. Limited activity can make it harder for developers to sustain applications, reducing the incentive for additional capital to enter the ecosystem.

Hoskinson’s completion claim comes as Cardano attempts to overcome another longstanding constraint through Ouroboros Leios, an upgrade designed to substantially increase the number of transactions the blockchain can process.

The project’s development roadmap targets 10 to 65 times throughput improvements through a phased implementation, potentially enabling Cardano to support far more demanding applications.

Hoskinson described Leios as the final component of his original vision, which includes decentralized consensus and governance, the extended unspent transaction output accounting model, Plutus smart contracts, formal verification and multiple independent node implementations.

The upgrade would give Cardano greater processing capacity. Still, its relatively modest transaction volumes suggest that expanding demand for the network may prove just as consequential as increasing its technical limits.

That places greater attention on Hoskinson’s latest programming language initiative and whether it can make the blockchain more attractive to developers building sophisticated financial applications.

Cardano just added the kind of token controls Wall Street wants and DeFi may hate

New programming language opens another front in adoption push

The upcoming language could change how applications are designed and run on Cardano.

Intent-based systems let users specify the outcome they want from a transaction, while software executes it under predefined conditions. For financial applications, this could simplify operations involving multiple asset exchanges, automated execution, and complex settlement requirements.

Proof-carrying data adds another capability by attaching cryptographic evidence to information to support its validity. Combined with Groth16 zero-knowledge proofs, this could enable applications to verify certain transactions or computations without exposing all the underlying information.

The approach could support financial products that require automated settlement, confidential verification, and more sophisticated interactions between decentralized services.

Hoskinson described the proposed language as the first of its kind, though it has not yet published its architecture, performance characteristics, or technical specifications.

Lucas Rosa’s involvement is significant because he previously helped develop Aiken, a programming language designed to make building smart contracts on Cardano more accessible.

Aiken was developed to simplify a process historically associated with Plutus and its Haskell-based programming environment. Its compiler, testing tools, and more familiar syntax were intended to lower the technical barriers facing developers entering the ecosystem.

The new project could extend that effort into intent-based execution and cryptographic verification, areas that may become increasingly relevant as decentralized applications incorporate automated trading and autonomous software agents.

Cardano already supports cryptographic primitives that can verify pairing-based zero-knowledge proofs, so the proposed language’s commercial appeal will depend partly on how effectively it packages those capabilities for developers.

That raises an immediate question about adoption. Improved developer tools can reduce the cost and complexity of launching applications, but developers also need access to users, liquidity, and transaction demand to make their products commercially sustainable.
