Andreessen Horowitz announced on Oct. 22 that it is renaming a16z Crypto to a16z Frontier and expanding the scope of its $2.2 billion fifth fund beyond crypto startups to companies developing emerging technologies and creating new markets.
The announcement from managing partner Chris Dixon followed a report from The Information earlier that day about plans to drop “crypto” from the investment brand.
Dixon confirmed that the expansion would encompass technologies beyond blockchain, with particular attention to artificial intelligence, autonomous machines and emerging networks connecting people and software agents.
“This is an expansion,” Dixon wrote, adding that the firm would continue investing in crypto ventures and advocating for sensible crypto regulation.
The announcement clarifies the direction of a fund that was presented as exclusively crypto-focused when it launched five months earlier.
From crypto-only to frontier investing
On May 5, a16z crypto announced its $2.2 billion Crypto Fund 5, focused on stablecoins, on-chain finance, decentralized infrastructure and applications involving autonomous software agents.
At the time, a spokesperson told Fortune that Fund 5 was “100% dedicated to investing in crypto entrepreneurs.”
Dixon’s October statement explicitly broadens that mandate.
He argued that the growing integration of blockchain infrastructure into conventional financial services has made the crypto label increasingly restrictive.
Wall Street firms and fintech companies now routinely develop products using blockchain infrastructure, Dixon said, complicating the distinction between crypto businesses and companies operating in other sectors.
The investment thesis published in May already connected blockchain infrastructure with financial services and software agents. Its examples included cross-border payments, access to dollars, decentralized financial services and ways for autonomous software to transact.
Those applications remain within the expanded strategy, while a16z Frontier can now pursue technologies whose commercial prospects extend beyond crypto infrastructure.
AI, autonomous machines and new markets
Dixon identified AI as the central technology wave shaping the fund’s expanded investment approach.
He argued that advances in AI models and infrastructure are beginning to enable products and markets that existing technology categories cannot adequately describe.
The areas he discussed include autonomous devices capable of interacting with the physical world, technologies drawing on advances in biology and medicine, and startups combining software, hardware and services.
He also identified networks connecting people and autonomous software agents as an emerging area of interest.
Blockchains would remain important to those networks, according to Dixon, by providing programmable financial infrastructure that allows software agents to exchange value and coordinate economic activity.
He cited stablecoins as an increasingly common tool for financial institutions and fintech businesses, and said crypto infrastructure could support machine-to-machine transactions and help establish new networks.
The broader scope therefore extends the firm’s existing interest in AI and blockchain integration to businesses developing technologies that may have little direct connection to cryptocurrency markets.
Dixon did not specify capital allocations for individual sectors or identify how much of Fund 5 would be invested outside crypto.
What changes for the $2.2 billion fund
The rebrand extends beyond a single investment vehicle. a16z Crypto has raised approximately $9.8 billion across five funds, including its $4.5 billion fourth fund in 2022.
Dixon said he would lead a16z Frontier alongside firm founders Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, and general partners Eddy Lazzarin and Guy Wuollet.
The existing operating teams will continue supporting portfolio companies with regulatory matters, technical research, recruitment and business development.
The announcement establishes an expanded investment mandate but leaves questions about its implementation.
An April 2 SEC Form D identifies one fifth-fund entity as AH Crypto Fund V, L.P., with no previous names listed at the time of filing.
Dixon’s statement did not specify whether the rebrand would change the legal names of individual fund vehicles or how capital would be divided between crypto and other frontier technologies.
Future investment disclosures will show how much of the $2.2 billion fund is directed toward businesses outside the cryptocurrency sector, following its transition from a crypto-exclusive mandate to a broader technology investment strategy.
