U.S. Mint coin production rebounded sharply in September amid continued production of special designs celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary. The Mint struck 342.5 million circulating-quality coins, up 47.4% from August’s 232.4 million, with higher output of nickels and quarters and steady dime production. The monthly total was also 42.8% above a year earlier, although production through September remained 36.6% below the same period in 2025.

Among the 1776 ~ 2026 Semiquincentennial designs, U.S. Constitution quarters led September’s quarter production, joined by additional Declaration of Independence quarters. Philadelphia also increased output of Enduring Liberty half dollars and struck another 4.1 million President Trump $1 coins.

The following table shows how September’s production compares with other months over the past year:

September 2025 to September 2026 Circulating Coin Production

    Month Mintages Rank
    September 2026 342.50 M 4
    August 2026 232.40 M 9

    September 2025 239.82 M 8

The U.S. Mint produces circulating coins based on orders it receives from the Federal Reserve Banks. The Federal Reserve then distributes the coins through its terminals to commercial banks and other financial institutions, helping maintain the supply needed to meet everyday public demand.

    September Production by Denomination

Recent totals reflect a major change in the Mint’s circulating coin mix. At the direction of the Treasury, the U.S. Mint ended the production of cents for circulation in July 2025, removing what had long been its highest-volume denomination from circulating production. Cents are now struck only for collector products in proof and uncirculated finishes.

Among the most commonly used denominations, September production increased 46.6% for nickels, held steady for dimes and nearly tripled for quarters.

The U.S. Mint also produces other circulating-quality coins, including half dollars and dollar coins. The Federal Reserve no longer routinely orders dollar coins for general circulation, but the Mint continues to strike them for collector products. The same was true of half dollars until Federal Reserve orders resumed in 2021. Half dollars have been produced for circulation each year since, though in much smaller quantities than other denominations. The Mint also continues to strike circulating-quality half dollars for collector products.

    Semiquincentennial Half Dollar Production Continues

It remains unclear how many 2026 half dollars have been produced specifically for general circulation. This year is unique for the denomination, as the long-running Kennedy half dollar design has been replaced with a one-year-only “Enduring Liberty” theme marking the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Half dollar production dropped to zero at the Denver Mint in September, while output increased at the Philadelphia Mint compared with August, according to U.S. Mint figures:

    • January: +7.5 million from Denver and +6.3 million from Philadelphia
    • February: +3 million from Denver and +1.8 million from Philadelphia
    • March: +7.6 million from Denver and +3.2 million from Philadelphia
    • April: +3.6 million from Denver and +7.6 million from Philadelphia
    • May: +6.0 million from Denver and +6.0 million from Philadelphia
    • June: +8.7 million from Denver and +1.0 million from Philadelphia
    • July: +6.4 million from Denver and +6.6 million from Philadelphia
    • August: +4.8 million from Denver and +2.9 million from Philadelphia
    • September: +4.8 million from Philadelphia

Combined production through September reached 87.8 million half dollars, including 47.6 million from Denver and 40.2 million from Philadelphia. That total is already more than 2.5 times the 34 million struck during all of 2025, when Denver produced 19.8 million and Philadelphia made 14.2 million.

On May 26, the Mint opened sales of 2026-P and 2026-D Enduring Liberty half dollars in two-roll sets and 200-coin bags, each containing equal numbers from Philadelphia and Denver. Through Oct. 4, sales totaled 13,178,080 coins. The two-roll sets have been unavailable for some time, with sales nearly reaching their 100,000-product limit. Bags remained available throughout September, with roughly 4,000 left under their 50,000-product limit at month’s end.

In August, the Mint presented 2,983 specially struck 1776 ~ 2026 Enduring Liberty half dollars to the National 9/11 Memorial & Museum. Produced at West Point, the coins carry a W mint mark and an ALWAYS REMEMBER privy mark surrounding the date 9-11-01. Their limited mintage matches the number of victims commemorated at the memorial, including those killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

Another 250,000 West Point-struck halves bearing the same privy mark entered circulation on Sept. 14. Shipped to Federal Reserve Banks for random distribution nationwide, the coins offer the public a chance to find the limited-mintage pieces in everyday change.

Philadelphia also struck a separate version of the 1776 ~ 2026 Enduring Liberty half dollar featuring a NEVER FORGET 9/11 privy mark. These coins were offered during a limited preorder window from Sept. 10 to Sept. 25 in 20-coin rolls priced at $40 and 100-coin bags at $100. Sales through Oct. 4 totaled 3,625,500 coins.

Mintages of Native American Dollars Unchanged

No 2026 Native American dollars were produced in August or September. U.S. Mint figures show:

    • January: +140,000 from Denver
    • February: +840,000 from Philadelphia
    • March: +840,000 from Philadelphia
    • April: +2.55 million from Denver and +1.25 million from Philadelphia
    • May: None
    • June: +560,000 from Denver and +720,000 from Philadelphia
    • July: +150,000 from Denver and +250,000 from Philadelphia
    • August: None
    • September: None

Combined production through September totals 3.4 million coins from Denver and 3.9 million from Philadelphia — 7.3 million coins overall.

For comparison, 2025 production reached 5.18 million coins, including 2.52 million from Denver and 2.66 million from Philadelphia.

On Jan. 27, the U.S. Mint began selling 2026-P and 2026-D Native American dollars, with buyers able to choose coins struck at either the Philadelphia or Denver Mint. Through Oct. 4, combined sales totaled 1,086,300 coins, split nearly evenly between the two facilities. Both options have remained unavailable from the Mint for some time. Reported sales stand essentially at the listed product limits, indicating that little to no inventory remains for further sales.

Trump $1 Coin Production Reaches 20.5 Million

Production of the 1776 ~ 2026 President Donald J. Trump $1 coin continued in September. The Philadelphia Mint struck an additional 4.1 million pieces after producing 7.4 million in August and 9 million in July, bringing the total to 20.5 million coins. Production has been exclusive to Philadelphia, as first announced.

The Mint began selling Trump dollars Sept. 2 in 25-coin rolls priced at $61 and 100-coin bags at $154.50. Included among those products are 250,000 dollars struck July 4 with a JULY 4th privy mark and randomly mixed into the rolls and bags. The bags became unavailable in less than an hour, while the rolls remained available for about 7 hours and 20 minutes. Product limits of 150,000 rolls and 50,000 bags cover at most 8.75 million coins.

The Mint also said Trump dollars were released into circulation. Production through September totaled 20.5 million coins, well above the maximum of 8.75 million offered in the collector rolls and bags.

The following table shows September 2026 circulating coin mintages by production facility and denomination.

In September, the Denver Mint struck 180.6 million coins and the Philadelphia Mint produced 161.9 million, lifting combined output to 342.5 million coins.

    Coin Production Through September 2026

Year-to-date, the Denver Mint struck 1,432,100,000 coins and the Philadelphia Mint produced 1,210,600,000 coins, bringing the total to 2,642,700,000 coins. The total was 36.6% lower than the 4,170,440,000 coins produced during the same period in 2025.

This next table lists year-to-date coin production totals by denomination and by U.S. Mint facility:

If the current production pace continues through December, the 2026 annual mintage would reach 3.52 billion coins. For comparison, the U.S. Mint produced nearly 4.95 billion coins for circulation in 2025, marking a fifth straight yearly decline and the lowest output since 2009. The 2025 total was pulled lower in part by the near end of cent production in July, when just 400,000 were struck, followed by no cent production from August through December.

The following table shows coin production totals through the same period last year:
