Michael Gubbins, head of Ireland’s Criminal Assets Bureau, said organised crime gangs are renting safe deposit boxes to store crypto private keys and seed phrases alongside cash, watches and passports. The bureau has identified about €360 million in cryptocurrency tied to crime, realised more than €130 million of it, and returned €15 million to the Irish exchequer last year. The disclosure lands as the EU prepares to cap cash payments at €10,000 and require identification above €3,000 from July 2027 under a new anti-money-laundering regime. Bitcoin fell below US$80,000 after stronger-than-expected US jobs data increased expectations for tighter Federal Reserve policy. The resilient labour market pushed Treasury yields higher, putting further pressure on riskier assets such as Bitcoin. Markets are now watching US inflation data for clues about the Fed’s next move. Despite the price weakness, US spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted a combined US$1 billion over the final three trading days of the week. Bitcoin has dipped once again below the US$80K (AU$110.8K) mark and is currently trading at US$79,019 (AU$109,506). That’s a drop of 1.75% over the past 24 hours, in line with other…
Hunter Biden is reportedly set to launch the $LAPTOP memecoin on 9 September. The token is closely linked to the controversial laptop story that emerged before the 2020 US election. Biden’s lawyers have disputed the authenticity of some files, while Biden has publicly discussed the controversy. The launch would follow memecoins released by Donald and Melania Trump in 2025. In a very 2026 turn of events, there’s a new memecoin coming out. But not just any old memecoin. Hunter Biden, the son of former US President Joe Biden, is reportedly set to release a memecoin on 9 September called –…
DBS and Citi completed what they called the first weekend cross-border US dollar payment between Singapore and the United States on Saturday, settling in minutes using tokenised deposits on Swift’s blockchain-based ledger. Tokenised deposits are claims on commercial-bank money that can move around the clock; the funds stayed inside regulated banking channels rather than circulating as a public stablecoin. The transfer ran on a Swift ledger pilot launched in July with 17 banks across six continents, including HSBC, Citi, DBS, Standard Chartered, UBS and BNP Paribas. DBS and Citi settled a cross-border US dollar payment between Singapore and New York…
The value backing depositors’ shares in a modeled XRP Ledger loan book falls by 90,000 tokens when one loan defaults, compared with 4,500 when the same 100,000 tokens of bad debt sits in ten smaller loans. Both books start with 1 million tokens of debt, a 200,000-token reserve and identical protection settings. The 20-fold gap comes from how the documented lending rules release that reserve. Each default gets a separate cover calculation. Loan size therefore changes how much loss reaches depositors, even when the total unpaid debt and the capital available to absorb it stay the same at the outset.XRPL’s lending…
Tether-backed Orionx is shutting down with customer withdrawals frozen after more than $7 million left its custody. The Chilean crypto exchange said a forensic audit found that customer assets had been transferred to wallets outside its control, prompting it to begin a permanent closure and suspend withdrawals while it determines how much it can return. The failure comes less than a year after Tether invested in Orionx in June 2025, following an earlier investment by affiliated exchange Bitfinex in 2023. Tether’s backing had been intended to support Orionx’s expansion across Latin America.Customers now face a less certain outcome. Chile’s Comisión para el…
A seven-year-old blockchain is permanently abandoning its own network to seek refuge on Ethereum
Harmony is proposing to shut down the blockchain it controversially restored through a rollback less than three weeks ago.The Sept. 6 plan would end Harmony’s independent network, move ONE to Ethereum, and preserve the token through a snapshot and airdrop, reversing the project’s position from Aug. 17, when it rejected migration as too disruptive.Instead, Harmony chose to roll back the chain after an Aug. 11 exploit that allowed attackers to reuse cross-shard receipts and mint tokens without corresponding debits elsewhere. The project initially reported 4 billion ONE created in the attack. Its broader reconstruction later put unauthorized issuance at roughly 3.01 trillion…
UBS’s new forecast of two Federal Reserve rate hikes this year extends Bitcoin’s potential macro headwind through December. The issue reaches beyond September’s decision: investors may have to weigh the cost of holding a non-yielding asset against interest-bearing alternatives through the end of 2026.Reuters reported Sept. 7 that UBS Global Wealth Management now expects increases of 25 basis points, or a quarter of a percentage point, in both September and December. It had previously expected no policy change this year. UBS cited strong August labor data, hawkish Fed communication and inflation risks from supply bottlenecks.Markets are already moving toward that…
Ethereum arbitrage generated about $5.24 in builder receipts for every $1 burned in a 30-day sample reported by blockchain data provider Bitquery. Its allocation puts 49.3% of measured surplus toward block assembly, 9.4% toward burned fees and 41.3% with trading operators. For ETH holders, the finding shows why trading activity and the investment case for holding the token require different measures. Payments reward participants executing and ordering trades; fee burning changes ETH supply. Builders also pay validators to propose blocks, so the largest receipt bucket does not identify the largest final profit. The investigation marks its figures verified Aug. 31, 2026. Its…
Lending protocol Moonwell’s proposed rate changes could cut monthly interest accruing on bad debt by about 85%, according to Anthias Labs’ projection. Its Sept. 4 recovery update leaves access to USDC and a return to borrowing as separate hurdles.Moonwell said in the update that governance proposal MIP-X66 had entered its vote collection period. The package combines changes to market risk settings, interest-rate models and the use of protocol reserves to recapitalize the USDC market. The Sept. 4 announcement described what would happen after execution, without confirming reserve transfers or setting a supplier repayment timetable. MIP-X66’s subsequent execution status and actual USDC…
