In a very 2026 turn of events, there’s a new memecoin coming out. But not just any old memecoin. Hunter Biden, the son of former US President Joe Biden, is reportedly set to release a memecoin on 9 September called – wait for it – Laptop.
Initial reporting by The Wall Street Journal, later picked up by CNN, confirms that Biden will issue a coin named $LAPTOP.
Biden himself also posted on X about the plans, though it wasn’t immediately clear if he was serious.
Hunter Biden’s laptop became a major political flashpoint after he left the device at a Delaware repair shop in 2019, with the FBI taking possession months later. Its contents, including personal and financial material, drew intense attention ahead of the 2020 presidential election, particularly in conservative media.

Biden’s attorneys have disputed the authenticity of some files, arguing they were manipulated. Biden has since addressed the controversy publicly, including writing that “What they found was evidence of a man who suffered for a period of time from a severe addiction to crack cocaine and alcohol.”
Biden Not the First to Launch Political Memecoin
He has also increasingly advocated for cryptocurrency and decentralised digital currencies, calling the latter the “inevitable future”.
Of course, the reported memecoin launch wouldn’t be the first of its kind. Sitting US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump also released their own memecoins just as Trump returned to office in 2025.
That made the Trumps an estimated US$1 billion (AU$1.38 billion) richer, as investors piled in.
The Journal also stated that Biden would launch his cryptocurrency on the low-cost Ethereum layer-2 blockchain Base.
