- Telegram is preparing to embed a self-custody crypto wallet into every version of its messaging app, giving more than one billion users direct access to Gram transfers.
- The built-in wallet is designed to remove reliance on third-party custodians while expanding Telegram’s broader blockchain ecosystem.
- The rollout follows the revival of the Gram name and marks another step in Telegram’s renewed involvement with The Open Network.
Telegram will roll out a native non-custodial cryptocurrency wallet to every version of its messaging app before the end of summer, giving its audience of more than one billion monthly active users access to instant, zero-fee Gram transfers. Gram is the cryptocurrency formerly known as Toncoin.
According to founder Pavel Durov, the release represents the largest rollout of a non-custodial crypto wallet in history. The wallet will place users in direct control of their private keys, allowing them to manage their own digital assets instead of depending on a third party to hold funds.
Telegram currently provides a Wallet service that has more than 150 million registered users, but that product is separate from the messaging platform itself. By contrast, the new wallet will be integrated into every Telegram app. The company has yet to announce a precise launch date, explain how the new wallet will relate to the existing Wallet service, or disclose the full range of supported assets and technical details.

How Gram Returned to Telegram
The wallet launch forms part of Telegram’s wider crypto strategy. In June, Toncoin was renamed Gram following a community vote, and Telegram took over as the primary steward and largest validator of The Open Network after replacing the TON Foundation.
Telegram’s original Gram project began in 2018 and raised US$1.7 billion (AU$2.47 billion) from investors before regulatory action by the US Securities and Exchange Commission led the company to abandon it. The blockchain was later continued by independent developers under the Toncoin name before returning to the Gram brand.
