Half Dome Gold Coin Collection Holds Three No. 1 Rankings

A record-setting 1911-D Indian Head eagle purchased for $1.8 million anchors an extraordinary collection of 20th-century U.S. gold coins assembled over 14 years by an anonymous Wall Street executive.

Known as the Half Dome Collection, the holding includes more than 100 Indian Head quarter eagles, half eagles and eagles, along with a complete Saint-Gaudens double eagle set. Its three Indian Head sets rank first in their CAC Registry categories, while the Saint-Gaudens set ranks second and continues to be upgraded.

Graded PCGS MS66 CAC, the 1911-D eagle sold in Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ Feb. 3 auction of the James A. Stack, Sr. Collection, setting a record for any circulation-strike Indian Head $10 gold coin.

Legend Numismatics co-founders Laura Sperber and George Huang helped build the collection after the owner approached the firm in 2012 with limited experience in rare coins.

“He has the greatest $5 and $10 Indian sets ever assembled,” said Sperber, the American Numismatic Association’s 2026 Dealer of the Year and a recent inductee into the PCGS CoinFacts Coin Dealer Hall of Fame. “The quality will never be matched anywhere.”

Legend said the Indian Head $10 set is also being inducted into the PCGS Set Registry Hall of Fame in 2026.

Three Top-Ranked Indian Head Gold Sets

The collection includes complete business-strike sets of all three Indian Head gold denominations produced during the early 20th century.

Its quarter eagle set, covering 1908 through 1929, ranks first in the CAC Registry with a score of 67.74. A leading coin is the 1911-D quarter eagle graded PCGS MS66+ CAC.

The complete half eagle set also ranks first, with a current score of 67.41. Its highlights include a 1909-O half eagle graded PCGS MS65+ CAC, one of the series’ principal rarities.

The Indian Head eagle set, spanning 1907 through 1933, ranks first with a score of 68.59. Along with the record-setting 1911-D, it contains a 1920-S eagle graded PCGS MS67+ CAC.

Bela Lyon Pratt designed the incuse Indian Head quarter eagle and half eagle, while Augustus Saint-Gaudens created the design used for the $10 eagle.

    Saint-Gaudens Set Ranks Second

The collector’s Saint-Gaudens double eagle set is 100% complete and ranks second in its CAC Registry category with a score of 67.41.

Highlights include a 1907 Ultra High Relief and a 1927-D double eagle graded PCGS MS66. The 1927-D is the only coin among the four sets that does not carry a CAC sticker, according to Legend.

Although complete, the set remains a work in progress as the collector searches for upgrades that could move it into the top position.

“The Half Dome collector, who is only in his early 50s, does not consider his sets finished, and this is not his only numismatic endeavor,” Sperber said.

CAC founder John Albanese emphasized the difficulty of recreating the collection.

“Even if funds were unlimited, anyone would have better odds of climbing Mount Everest than duplicating this remarkable set,” Albanese said.

    Childhood Interest Becomes Major Collection

The collector’s interest began in childhood as he searched through coins obtained from banks and watched his father assemble sets of gem-quality Walking Liberty half dollars and Mint State red Indian Head cents.

He returned to the hobby as an adult and began working with Legend in 2012. The firm later became his exclusive rare-coin dealer and helped him pursue high-grade Indian Head and Saint-Gaudens gold coins struck between 1907 and 1933.

“He did not start out to build the finest 20th-century gold set, but about halfway into it, he really got bitten by the collecting bug,” Sperber said. “So, he pressed on, and now he has built a remarkable collection that is impossible to replicate.”

Nearly all the coins have been approved by Certified Acceptance Corporation, whose stickers identify qualifying PCGS- and NGC-certified coins considered high-end for their assigned grades.

Parts of the Half Dome Collection could eventually be displayed at an American Numismatic Association World’s Fair of Money convention. Sperber also plans a “coffee table” book featuring high-resolution photographs and information about the coins.

The collection takes its name from Half Dome, the prominent Yosemite National Park formation that has long fascinated its owner.
