U.S. Constitution Quarter Hides a 2:50 Anniversary Nod

One of the smallest details on the new 1776 ~ 2026 U.S. Constitution quarter carries a clever anniversary message: the clock on Independence Hall, depicted on the reverse, is set to 2:50 in a nod to America’s 250th anniversary.

An enlarged view of the 1776 2026 US Constitution quarter shows the Independence Hall clock set to 250 as a subtle reference to the 250th anniversary of American independence

The detail is easy to miss at actual quarter size. Enlarged views reveal the minute hand pointing toward 10 and the hour hand approaching 3, making the intended time clear.

The U.S. Mint does not call attention to the clock setting in its published description of the design. Instead, it describes the reverse as depicting Independence Hall in Philadelphia, where the Liberty Bell was housed and where both the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution were written, debated and signed. WE THE PEOPLE appears prominently above the building, underscoring the constitutional principle that government is grounded in the consent of the governed.

The 2:50 setting adds another Semiquincentennial element to a coin already carrying several. Its obverse depicts James Madison, popularly known as the “Father of the Constitution,” along with the anniversary dual date 1776 ~ 2026.

Joel Iskowitz designed the Madison portrait and Don Everhart sculpted it, while Donna Weaver designed the Independence Hall reverse and Phebe Hemphill sculpted it.

2:50 Becomes a Recurring Anniversary Detail

The clock treatment is not unique to the quarter. The same hidden 2:50 reference appears on Independence Hall in the 1776 ~ 2026 Freedom Ringing Liberty Bell products released in July. Their reverse depicts the historic building with celebratory fireworks behind it.

CoinNews photo shows the reverse of a 2026 $125 Freedom Ringing Liberty Bell One Half Ounce Gold Coin

The Freedom Ringing series consists of a $250 one-ounce gold coin, a $125 half-ounce gold coin and a half-ounce silver medal, each struck in the shape of the Liberty Bell. The Mint limited each to just 2,026 pieces, making them among the more unusual collectibles created for the anniversary.

Its appearance on both the Constitution quarter and Freedom Ringing pieces makes the 2:50 clock a recurring, if understated, design element in the Mint’s celebration of 250 years of American independence.

The Constitution quarter began entering circulation Aug. 10 as the fourth of five one-year quarter designs issued for the Semiquincentennial. It follows the Mayflower Compact, Revolutionary War and Declaration of Independence quarters, with a Gettysburg Address design still to come later this year.

The reverse also links naturally with the preceding Declaration of Independence quarter. That coin depicts the Liberty Bell, while the Constitution quarter shifts the focus to Independence Hall itself.

Constitution Quarter Rolls and Bags Arrive Aug. 2

Collectors will have another opportunity to obtain the Constitution quarter on Aug. 26, when the Mint begins selling circulating-quality Philadelphia and Denver coins in rolls and bags. A two-roll set containing coins from both facilities is priced at $56, while separate 100-coin bags are $63 each.

For collectors examining the Constitution quarter in hand, the tiny clock provides one of the design’s more inventive links to the anniversary it was created to celebrate.
