Zcash ETF nears $1 billion as ZEC’s price doubles above $1500

Grayscale’s Zcash ETF is closing in on $1 billion in assets less than a month after its Wall Street debut.

The fund, which trades as ZCSH on NYSE Arca, has accumulated $914.53 million in net assets and $270.95 million in cumulative net inflows, SoSoValue data shows. Its rapid expansion has coincided with Zcash’s value roughly doubling since the product began trading on Aug. 25.

ZCSH has added more than $400 million in assets since Sept. 8, when Grayscale said the fund had crossed $500 million just two weeks after listing. The acceleration leaves the product about $85 million short of the $1 billion threshold as investor demand converges with one of ZEC’s strongest rallies in years.

ZEC rally pushes derivatives activity to records

Data from CryptoSlate showed ZEC traded around $1,540 on Sept. 19, roughly twice its level when ZCSH began trading on NYSE Arca.

The rally has increasingly spilled into derivatives markets.

CoinGlass data showed ZEC futures open interest climbing to an all-time high of about $3.5 billion this week, while futures trading volume crossed $10 billion for the first time since early June.

The buildup shows traders are committing substantially more leveraged capital to ZEC as its spot price rises. Higher open interest does not establish that positioning is uniformly bullish, but record exposure combined with elevated turnover increases the market’s sensitivity to abrupt reversals and liquidation cascades.

The price advance has also coincided with a series of decisions over Zcash’s monetary policy and next network upgrade.

Zcash holders this month backed retaining the network’s Bitcoin-style halving schedule rather than moving to a smoother issuance system. About 2.4 million ZEC participated in the advisory vote, representing roughly two-thirds of eligible supply.

Participants also favored delaying the reissuance of tokens accumulated through the Network Sustainability Mechanism until 2031. The mechanism removes a portion of transaction fees from circulation before those tokens can eventually return through future block rewards, while preserving Zcash’s 21 million maximum supply.

The result keeps key scarcity features intact at a time when regulated access to ZEC is expanding through ZCSH.

Holders separately backed reducing block times to 25 seconds from 75 seconds under the planned NU7 upgrade. They also supported advancing NU7 as quickly as possible while excluding features that fail to meet a Sept. 30 implementation-readiness deadline.

Those decisions remain advisory and still require technical implementation, leaving developers to determine which components will ultimately make the upgrade.

For ZCSH, the underlying token rally has already had a direct effect on the fund’s asset base.

Because the product holds ZEC, gains in the cryptocurrency increase the value of assets already inside the vehicle alongside new investor creations. That helps explain why ZCSH’s $914.53 million asset base is more than three times its cumulative $270.95 million net inflows.

Grayscale moves to lower ZCSH’s per-share price

The rapid increase in the value represented by each ZCSH share is now being followed by a change in the fund’s share structure.

Grayscale announced a 3-for-1 forward split on Sept. 18 that will triple the number of ZCSH shares outstanding while reducing the net asset value represented by each share to roughly one-third of its pre-split level.

Shareholders of record at the close of trading Sept. 28 will receive two additional shares for every share already held. The distribution is scheduled after the market closes Sept. 29, with split-adjusted trading expected to begin before the opening bell on Sept. 30.

The transaction will not change the aggregate value of an investor’s position solely because of the split. A holder will own three times as many shares, with each representing a proportionately smaller portion of the fund.

Lowering the nominal share price can make smaller whole-share purchases easier, particularly after a sharp rise in the value of the underlying asset. Grayscale has not said the move is intended to increase demand or liquidity, and the fund will retain its ZCSH ticker and existing CUSIP.

The timing puts the fund’s first major share adjustment alongside another key date for the network itself. Sept. 30 is also the implementation-readiness deadline for proposed NU7 features.

ZCSH could reach the $1 billion mark before then if inflows continue and ZEC holds its recent gains. At the same time, record derivatives exposure means a sharp reversal in the token would feed quickly into the value of the ZEC backing the fund, making the next leg of asset growth increasingly dependent on both investor demand and the durability of the rally.
