Saint-Gaudens Set Closes U.S. Mint’s Best of the Mint Series

Closing out the United States Mint’s five-release Best of the Mint series, the 1907 Saint-Gaudens High Relief $20 Gold Coin and Silver Medal Set goes on sale today at noon ET. The release recreates one of the most celebrated designs in American numismatic history.

Issued for America’s 250th anniversary, the set pairs a one-ounce 24-karat gold recreation of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ famed 1907 High Relief Double Eagle, bearing a Liberty Bell 250 privy mark, with a newly designed one-ounce silver medal.

In 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt sought to elevate the artistic quality of American coinage and commissioned the renowned sculptor to redesign the $20 gold piece.

Saint-Gaudens’ design called for exceptionally high relief, allowing for remarkable sculptural detail but making the coins difficult to produce using standard minting equipment. Only a limited number were struck before the Mint lowered the relief later that year for practical mass production. The original version is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful U.S. coins ever created and remains highly prized by collectors.

Semiquincentennial Best of the Mint Program

The Best of the Mint series is one of several U.S. Mint programs marking the 2026 Semiquincentennial, pairing .9999 fine gold coins inspired by classic American designs with modern one-ounce .999 fine silver medals. The lineup includes:

Sales totals through Sept. 20 vary considerably among the first four releases. Closest to its mintage limit is the Mercury Dime set, with 29,824 of a possible 30,000 reported sold. Sales stand at 16,744 for the Standing Liberty set and 10,105 for the Walking Liberty set, both also capped at 30,000. The 1804 Silver Dollar set, limited to 15,000, has recorded sales of 11,915.

Best of the Mint 1907 Saint-Gaudens High Relief Set Designs

On the gold coin’s obverse, Liberty strides forward carrying a torch and olive branch, with the U.S. Capitol dome in the background. Inscriptions are LIBERTY and MCMVII. A Liberty Bell privy mark bearing the numeral 250 commemorates the semiquincentennial of the nation’s founding.

The reverse features a soaring eagle above the rays of a rising sun, with inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS.

As on the original 1907 coin, E PLURIBUS UNUM appears on the edge.

The companion silver medal reimagines key elements of Saint-Gaudens’ historic design. On the obverse, Liberty is shown from a fresh perspective, striding forward with a torch and olive branch and accompanied by 13 stars representing the original colonies. Inscriptions are LIBERTY and MMXXVI.

On the reverse, the eagle’s wings are transformed into an American flag as it soars above a rising sun, offering a contemporary interpretation of the original design. The sole inscription is UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
