Coin Treasure Hunts Coming to Four U.S. Cities in October

Stack’s Bowers Galleries is taking coin collecting outdoors this October with a series of treasure hunts offering $40,000 in numismatic prizes across four U.S. cities.

Five-day events are planned for Miami, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Boston, with $10,000 in prizes available at each stop. Individual awards will range in approximate retail value from $300 to about $3,500 for each city’s top prize.

One prize certificate will be hidden each day at a selected location in the host city. Participants will follow clues and solve riddles released through the local Stack’s Bowers Instagram account, then take a winning certificate to the corresponding gallery to claim the associated numismatic collectible.

Hunts Begin Oct. 6 in Miami

Miami opens the series from Oct. 6 through 10. Clues will draw on Florida’s coastal history and shipwreck treasure lore, with updates posted through the Stack’s Bowers Miami Instagram page.

Philadelphia follows from Oct. 13 through 17. The U.S. Mint struck its first coins in the city in 1792, and the hunt will feature riddles tied to the beginnings of American coinage and currency. Updates will appear on the Stack’s Bowers Philadelphia Instagram page.

San Francisco hosts the third event from Oct. 20 through 24, with clues inspired by the city’s Gold Rush history. Participants can follow the Stack’s Bowers San Francisco Instagram page for updates.

Boston closes the series from Oct. 27 through 31. Its hunt will take participants through clues tied to the city’s streets, parks and centuries of American history, with details posted on the Stack’s Bowers Boston Instagram page.

$10,000 in Prizes at Each Stop

Prize selections will vary by city, but Stack’s Bowers said each gallery will distribute approximately $10,000 worth of numismatic collectibles during its five-day event.

The four participating galleries accept walk-in visitors. Those planning to join a hunt can also register online for updates and early clues.
