Two Aave stablecoin backstops shrank $12.4 million

Aave’s two tracked Ethereum V3 stablecoin backstops shrank by $12.4 million between Sept. 17 and Oct. 17 even as their extra reward rates increased. Together, the USDC and USDT positions held $116.09 million at the later observation, down 9.67% from $128.52 million.

The positions belong to Umbrella, Aave’s system for using staked assets to absorb lending deficits. Participants keep earning underlying lending yield and receive additional rewards for accepting the possibility that their stakes will be used to cover losses.

The figures measure dollar-valued stakes. Their movement includes asset valuation as well as changes in the amount deposited, so a decline in the balance alone cannot identify withdrawals or losses.

Multiplying each position’s tracked dollar value by its displayed extra reward rate implies approximately $1.994 million annualized at both endpoints. A richer percentage rate coincided with less tracked protection capital, while that indicative aggregate reward amount barely moved.

DefiLlama’s USDC history records a decline from $58,739,617 to $53,437,993. Its USDT history shows a fall from $69,783,937 to $62,655,694. Those are reductions of $5.30 million and $7.13 million, respectively, adding to $12,429,867.

Both comparisons use the Sept. 17 observation at 23:01 UTC and the Oct. 17 observation at 15:01 UTC, in 2026. The timestamps are slightly less than 30 days apart. The percentages below are the additional reward component displayed for those observations.

Ethereum V3 Umbrella stake Capital, Sept. 17 Capital, Oct. 17 Extra reward rate, Sept. 17 Extra reward rate, Oct. 17
    USDC $58,739,617 $53,437,993 1.66% 1.82%
    USDT $69,783,937 $62,655,694 1.46% 1.63%

The tracked positions are wrapped-aToken Umbrella stakes on Ethereum V3. DefiLlama identifies them as stkwaEthUSDC.v1 and stkwaEthUSDT.v1; their token identities match the current Aave address book.

The USDC extra rate increased by 0.16 percentage points and the USDT rate by 0.17 points. Lending yield moved separately: USDC’s base rate rose from about 3.60% to 3.77%, while USDT’s increased from about 3.02% to 3.12%. The base component reflects the lending return. The extra component compensates for staking and slashing risk; only that component belongs in this safety-incentive calculation.

How the reward rate can rise

For each observation, the calculation is the tracked dollar value multiplied by the displayed extra reward percentage, divided by 100, then summed across the two stakes.

Using the September values gives $1,993,923.12 annualized. Using the October values gives $1,993,859.28. Both round to $1.994 million.

Two tracked Ethereum V3 Umbrella stakes: combined capital fell from $128.52 million to $116.09 million between September 17 and October 17, 2026. USDC and USDT extra reward rates rose, while capital times those rates implied about $1.994 million annualized at both observations; this is not realized spending. Two tracked Ethereum V3 Umbrella stakes: combined capital fell from $128.52 million to $116.09 million between September 17 and October 17, 2026. These amounts are indicative annualized run rates derived from snapshots. Actual accrual and payments depend on the path of rates, stake values, reward configuration and participation over time.

Umbrella’s reward-controller documentation explains a mechanism through which the percentage rate can rise without a larger aggregate distribution. Its emission curve relates the amount of rewards distributed to the amount staked relative to a configured target.

Aggregate emissions reach their maximum at the target. Between the target and 120% of target, emissions decline toward 80% of that maximum. At or above the 120% boundary, aggregate emissions are flat. In that region, fewer stakes can share the same reward stream, increasing the rate per unit of capital.

Below target, the curve boosts rewards per unit to encourage participation, while aggregate emissions remain below their peak. The plateau provides one way for a smaller denominator to receive a higher percentage rate. Establishing whether it applied to these pools at both observations would require matched contract settings and balances; the histories alone leave that specific explanation unresolved.

A Sept. 25 proposal from TokenLogic sought to renew the allowances used to pay Umbrella rewards while leaving emission rates, target liquidity, cooldown parameters, deficit offsets and the Dec. 2, 2026 distribution end unchanged.

The proposed allowances covered rewards already accrued but unclaimed, including amounts owed to former stakers, plus remaining emissions through that distribution end. They replaced the remaining allowances. Reading those amounts as a fresh annual incentive budget would therefore combine past obligations with prospective payments.

What the smaller balances say about protection

Aave’s documentation confines staking risk to the relevant asset and network: USDC stake covers USDC deficits, while USDT stake serves its own reserve. The combined total measures the scale of the two positions. Each reserve’s protection depends on its own allocated stake.

Slashing follows a realized reserve deficit that exceeds the applicable deficit offset. LlamaRisk’s coverage explanation describes that offset as a DAO-funded first-loss layer before Umbrella stake is used.

The exit rules also matter to stakers weighing the extra return. Aave documents a 20-day cooldown followed by a two-day withdrawal window. Rewards keep accruing during cooldown, and the stake remains exposed to slashing while the holder waits.

The DefiLlama adapter values provider-reported total assets using an associated price. Wrapped aTokens have an exchange rate, so valuation is part of the measured balance.

The distinction also applies to Aave’s separate V4 coverage plans. CryptoSlate’s September reporting on the V4 proposal concerned proposed targets for different protection modules. Those targets concern different protection modules from the observed V3 balances.

At the October observation, the extra rates were higher and the two tracked balances were smaller. The incentive offer and the capital accompanying it had moved in opposite directions.
