Umayyad Gold Dinar, NGC-Certified, Heads CNG Jan. 14 Auction

An extremely rare coin from the Umayyad Dynasty that has been authenticated and graded by Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) is the centerpiece of an elite auction presented by Classical Numismatic Group. Bidding is already underway for the Triton XXIX auction, which concludes January 14, 2026.

With an estimate of $1 million, the Umayyad AH105(A.D. 724) Dinar graded AU 50 (lot 975) is expected to lead the way in an auction packed with exciting rarities. It was struck late in the Umayyad Caliphate, which began in A.D. 661 and encompassed much of the Mideast and northern Africa. It is thought to have been struck under Caliph Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik, who had just begun a 19-year reign.

It is of great interest to advanced collectors of Mideast numismatics because it is the first Islamic coin with an inscription that mentions Hijaz. Today part of Saudi Arabia, Hijaz is the birthplace of Islam and includes the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. Only two examples are known to have previously sold at auction, with each realizing a seven-figure amount, according to the auction house.

The auction also features an England 1662 Gold Crown graded NGC PF 63 Cameo and pedigreed to the Paramount Collection (lot 1135), with an estimate of $750,000. It was struck early in the reign of King Charles II from dies engraved by John Rottiers, one of the most talented coin designers in English history. It is one of only four in private hands and arguably the finest, according to the auction house.

Other NGC-certified highlights of the auction include:

    • a Great Britain 1839 Una and the Lion 5 Sovereign – W&R-280 graded NGC PF 62 Ultra Cameo (lot 1139), with an estimate of $200,000
    • a Great Britain 1706 5 Guineas graded NGC MS 61 and pedigreed to the Paramount Collection (lot 1137), with an estimate of $150,000
    • a Calabria, Taras c. 280-272 B.C. Gold Stater graded NGC Ancients Ch AU, 5/5 Strike and 4/5 Surface with Fine Style (lot 16), with an estimate of $50,000
    • a Sicily, Syracuse c. 405-400 B.C. Silver Decadrachm graded NGC Ancients Ch XF, 4/5 Strike and 4/5 Surface with Fine Style (lot 62), with an estimate of $40,000
    • a Poland 1591 Lithuania Ducat graded NGC AU Details (lot 1072), with an estimate of $40,000
    • a Lydia, Croesus 561-546 B.C. Gold Stater graded NGC Ancients Ch MS, 5/5 Strike and 5/5 Surface (lot 258), with an estimate of $30,000
    • a Byzantine Empire, Constantine XI A.D. 1448-53 Silver Stavraton graded NGC Ancients AU, 3/5 Strike and 5/5 Surface (lot 944), with an estimate of $30,000
    • a Bohemia 1536 Prague Gold Groschen graded NGC AU Details (lot 985), with an estimate of $30,000

Estimates are provided by the auction house.
