Perth Mint Bullion Sales Cool After February Surge

The Perth Mint reported softer bullion sales in March after February’s surge, though both gold and silver remained well above year-ago levels and first-quarter totals showed strong gains.

Neil Vance, the Perth Mint’s general manager of minted products, attributed the March result to shifting market conditions.

“While minted product sales eased in March following a particularly strong February, this reflects the impact of short-term market movements rather than any shift in underlying demand,” Vance said.

“Over both the three- and twelve-month periods, sales remain significantly higher, demonstrating the continued strength of global investor interest in high-quality precious metals.”

The Mint’s performance came amid a sharp drop in precious metals prices. LBMA data in U.S. dollars show gold falling 11.8%, or $613.95, to $4,608.35 an ounce in March, while silver declined 19.2%, or $17.29, to $72.69 an ounce.

Perth Mint Bullion Sales in March and First Quarter 2026

Gold coin and bar sales came in at 43,656 ounces in March, down 35.1% from February’s best month since November but 7.7% higher than in March 2025.

“Demand for gold from The Perth Mint followed overall market sentiment across March, with investors responding to heightened volatility and shifting price dynamics,” said John O’Donoghue, The Perth Mint’s general manager of institutions and business solutions.

“While periods of uncertainty tempered activity at times, we continued to see underlying confidence in gold, particularly as clients looked to capitalise on price movements.”

For the quarter, gold sales totaled 140,008 ounces, up 66.3% from 84,188 ounces in the same period last year.

Silver coin and bar sales totaled 976,450 ounces in March, down 49.3% from February’s strongest showing since April 2023 but up 36.9% from March 2025.

For the first quarter, silver sales reached 4,624,053 ounces, soaring 187.1% from 1,610,732 ounces a year earlier.
