Canadian Mint Marks 50 Years in Winnipeg With New Coin Set

The Royal Canadian Mint (mint.ca) is celebrating 50 years of coin production in Winnipeg with a new collector set honoring the facility that has produced Canada’s circulation coinage since 1976.

Opened to meet rising demand that could no longer be handled at the Mint’s Ottawa facility, the Winnipeg plant has grown into a major coin manufacturing hub for Canada and other nations.

“For the last 50 years, the Royal Canadian Mint’s Winnipeg facility has produced high-quality coinage for Canada and the world, as well as quality jobs for generations of Winnipeggers,” said Simon Kamel, Interim President and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint. “As we look to the next 50 years and beyond, our goal is to continue producing world-leading coinage in the most sustainable way possible.”

Winnipeg Facility Serves More Than 80 Nations

Today, the Winnipeg facility includes coin plating and manufacturing operations, a coin painting line, and the Hieu C. Truong Centre of Excellence, where research and development personnel work to advance coin manufacturing.

The Mint said the Winnipeg facility has produced billions of coins for more than 80 countries, with its coinage solutions emphasizing cost-effectiveness, security, and sustainability.

The facility is also central to the Mint’s sustainability efforts. Under its “Minting with Care” approach, the Mint noted it works to reduce the environmental impact of Canadian coin production by redistributing existing coins, limiting the need for new production, and reducing water use, industrial waste, and carbon emissions.

Collector Set Features “W” Mint Mark

To mark the anniversary, the Mint issued the Collector’s Edition Non-Circulation Coin Set — 50th Anniversary of the Royal Canadian Mint — Winnipeg.

The set contains Canada’s six circulation coin denominations: $2, $1, 50 cents, 25 cents, 10 cents, and 5 cents. Each coin bears a “W” mint mark on the obverse, identifying Winnipeg as the striking facility. The Mint describes it as the only “W” mint mark set of 2026.

Instead of a classic $2 coin, the set includes a special 2026 Collector’s Edition Non-Circulation $2 coin marking the Toonie’s 30th anniversary. The coins are struck in brilliant uncirculated finish and sealed in a presentation folder with anniversary-themed visuals.

Limited to 50,000 sets, the collector edition is priced at $29.95 CAD and is presented in outer packaging featuring a panorama of the facility and its surrounding landscape.

    Where to Buy

The collector set is available from the Royal Canadian Mint website, its boutiques in Winnipeg and Ottawa, participating Canada Post outlets, and through the Mint’s dealers and distributors.
