US Mint Launches 1776-2026 Proof Gold Buffalo With 250 Privy

Pure gold does not come cheap, and neither does today’s newest release from the United States Mint. Launching at noon ET, the 2026-W $50 Proof American Gold Buffalo is struck from one ounce of .9999 fine 24-karat gold and features one-year-only Semiquincentennial elements — the dual date 1776 ~ 2026 and a Liberty Bell privy mark with the numeral “250.”

Introduced in 2006 as the Mint’s first 24-karat gold coin series, the American Buffalo lineup includes both bullion and proof versions. Today’s proof coin is made for collectors, with mirror-like fields, frosted design elements and sharper visual contrast than its bullion counterpart.

The Semiquincentennial additions further lift collector interest, based on the performance of earlier coins carrying the same features. One example is the Mint’s annual proof American Gold Eagles, whose dual date and Liberty Bell “250” privy mark have helped early sales surpass recent-year levels.

However, to get one, buyers will have to shell out $5,540. Like other precious metals coins struck for collectors, it carries a sizable premium, with gold trading just above $4,700 an ounce on Wednesday.

Despite the high buy-in, thousands are expected to sell. Last year’s 2025-W Proof American Gold Buffalo has reached 7,851 coins sold through Sunday, after launching May 8, 2025, at $4,240. Gold was trading by $3,375 an ounce that day, underscoring the much higher pricing environment facing issue this year. Meanwhile, sales of the 2024-dated coin stand at 10,415. Unique Design Elements for Semiquincentennial

The gold coin draws its design from a historic American classic, the 1913 Buffalo Type 1 nickel, created by sculptor James Earle Fraser more than a century ago. The obverse (heads side) features a right-facing portrait of a Native American, while the reverse (tails side) showcases an American bison, commonly referred to as a buffalo.

Fraser is believed to have blended features from multiple Native American individuals to create the composite portrait on the obverse. The design retains the familiar placement of the portrait, the LIBERTY inscription and Fraser’s initial “F.”

As revealed in March, this year’s Semiquincentennial issue adds a Liberty Bell privy mark with the numeral “250” near the usual location of the “W” mint mark for the West Point Mint, which has been moved between the headdress feathers. The added dual date 1776 ~ 2026 appears along the lower right rim rather than on the portrait’s shoulder, where the year normally appears.

Unchanged, the reverse surrounds the buffalo with inscriptions reading UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, $50, 1 OZ., and .9999 FINE GOLD.

American Buffalo Gold Coin Specifications

Product Limit Set at 15,000

The American Gold Buffalo series has been issued annually since its 2006 introduction. Like recent issues, this year’s coin lists no mintage limit. Its product limit is 15,000, compared with 14,000 for last year’s coin and 16,000 for the 2024 edition, both of which remain available from the Mint.

Ordering and Pricing Adjustments

The 2026-W $50 Proof American Buffalo Gold Coin is available through the U.S. Mint’s webpage dedicated to the gold coins. An initial household order limit of one coin is in place.

As mentioned, initial pricing is set at $5,540. Like other U.S. Mint precious metal coins, the amount is subject to weekly adjustments under the Mint’s precious metals coin pricing matrix. The current price is based on an LBMA gold range of $4,600.00 to $4,649.99 an ounce.
