U.S. Mint 2026 Semiquincentennial Coin Production Explodes

U.S. Mint production topped 1 billion coins in April for the first time since August 2023. The expanding 1776 ~ 2026 Semiquincentennial rollout lifted the month’s output to more than twice the combined total from January through March. The milestone is especially striking because it came without cents, which often accounted for more than half of production in past billion-coin months.

CoinNews photo shows examples of 2026 U.S. circulating coins featuring one-year-only anniversary designs, including dual dates of 1776 ~ 2026

In April, the U.S. Mint reported more than 1.16 billion coins in circulating-quality production, led by nickels, dimes, quarters and half dollars — all carrying Semiquincentennial dating, and all but the nickel featuring related one-year-only designs. The month also brought the first reported output for the 250th anniversary-themed U.S. Constitution and Gettysburg Address quarters.

Overall, production surged 409% from March and rose 101.3% from a year earlier.

The following table shows how April’s production compares with other months over the past year:

April 2025 to April 2026 Circulating Coin Production

    Month Mintages* Rank
    April 2026 1,162.54 M 1
    March 2026 228.42 M 10
    February 2026 296.74 M 7
    January 2026 448.50 M 4
    December 2025 279.20 M 8
    November 2025 130.28 M 13
    October 2025 367.36 M 6
    September 2025 239.82 M 9
    August 2025 193.00 M 12
    July 2025 414.12 M 5
    June 2025 204.42 M 11
    May 2025 657.95 M 2
    April 2025 577.64 M 3

The U.S. Mint produces circulating coins based on orders it receives from the Federal Reserve Banks. The Federal Reserve then distributes the coins through its terminals to commercial banks and other financial institutions, helping maintain the supply needed to meet everyday public demand.

    Month-Over-Month Production Changes

Recent totals also reflect a major change in the Mint’s circulating coin mix. Beginning in July of last year, and at the direction of the Treasury, the U.S. Mint stopped producing cents for circulation. That change removed what had long been the Mint’s highest-volume denomination from circulating production. Cents are now struck only for collector products, with those figures not published by the Mint.

In month-over-month comparisons for coins commonly used by Americans, April production increased 470.1% for nickels, 324.1% for dimes, and 443.1% for quarters.

The U.S. Mint also produces other circulating-quality coins, including half dollars and dollars. Dollar coins are no longer ordered by the Federal Reserve, but they continue to be struck for collector products, with monthly production figures published by the Mint for Native American $1 coins. The same had applied to half dollars until 2021, when Federal Reserve orders resumed. Half dollars have been produced for circulation each year since, though in much smaller quantities than other denominations.

Mintages of 2026 Semiquincentennial Half Dollars

It remains unclear how many 2026 half dollars have been produced specifically for general circulation. This year is unique for the denomination, as the long-running Kennedy half dollar design has been replaced with a one-year-only “Enduring Liberty” theme marking the nation’s 250th anniversary.

The Mint’s half dollar production accelerated in April, with the month’s output exceeding the combined totals from January through March. Mint figures show the following:

    • January: +7.5 million from Denver and +6.3 million from Philadelphia
    • February: +3 million from Denver and +1.8 million from Philadelphia
    • March: +7.6 million from Denver and +3.2 million from Philadelphia
    • April: +21.7 million from Denver and +18.9 million from Philadelphia

Combined production through April totals 39.8 million coins from Denver and 30.2 million from Philadelphia — 70 million coins overall.

For comparison, 2025 production totaled 19.8 million coins at Denver and 14.2 million at Philadelphia, or 34 million overall.

On May 26, the U.S. Mint will begin sales of 2026-P and 2026-D Enduring Liberty half dollars in branded rolls and bags.

    Mintages of Native American Dollars

Like half dollars, 2026 Native American dollars saw a sharp April increase, with more coins struck during the month than during the entire January-to-March period. The Mint’s monthly production data show:

    • January: +140,000 from Denver
    • February: +840,000 from Philadelphia
    • March: +840,000 from Philadelphia
    • April: +2.56 million from Denver and +2.92 million from Philadelphia

Combined production through April totals 2.7 million coins from Denver and 4.6 million from Philadelphia — 7.3 million coins overall.

For comparison, 2025 production reached 5.18 million coins, including 2.52 million from Denver and 2.66 million from Philadelphia.

On Jan. 27, the U.S. Mint began selling 2026 P&D Native American dollars. Through May 17, combined sales totaled 1,033,100 coins, split nearly evenly between dollars from Denver and Philadelphia.

    Total 604,560,000 557,980,000 1,162,540,000

In April, the Denver Mint struck 604.56 million coins and the Philadelphia Mint produced 557.98 million, lifting combined output to 1,162,540,000 coins — the highest monthly total since June 2023, when production reached 1,297,180,000 coins.

Year-to-date, the Denver Mint struck 1,133,600,000 coins, and the Philadelphia Mint produced 1,002,700,000 coins, bringing the total to 2,136,200,000 coins. This is 13.3% fewer than the 2,464,350,000 coins manufactured during the same period in 2025.

This next table lists year-to-date coin production totals by denomination and by U.S. Mint facility:

YTD 2026 Circulating Coin Production by Denomination

    5 ¢ 10 ¢ 25 ¢ 50 ¢ N.A. $1 Total:
    Denver 402.7M 270M 418.4M 39.8M 2.7M 1,133.6M
    Philadelphia 299.0M 272M 396.8M 30.2M 4.6M 1,002.7M
    Total 701.8M 542M 815.2M 70.0M 7.3M 2,136.2M

If the current production pace continues through December, the 2026 annual mintage would top 6.4 billion coins. For comparison, the U.S. Mint produced nearly 4.95 billion coins for circulation in 2025, marking a fifth straight yearly decline and the lowest output since 2009 — though cent production was held at zero beginning in July 2025, accounting for much of the drop compared to previous years.

    Mintages of 2026 Semiquincentennial Quarters

As part of the nation’s America 250 celebration, the U.S. Mint is striking five unique 1776 ~ 2026 Semiquincentennial quarters. The five feature designs recognizing the Mayflower Compact, the Revolutionary War, the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the Gettysburg Address. Only the first two quarters have been released into circulation to date, though the Mint has already started producing the final three.
